While the facilities at the hotel are great, the attitude of the hotel staff during my stay this past weekend was the worst I've experienced. For context, I attended for a convention, which had some 1400 attendees, and is held at this hotel twice a year. From the moment we attempted to check-in, they attempted to over-charge us for the room, despite a price having been pre-booked. When we got to the room one of the towels left for us was filthy - I'm talking thick dark stains on it. We called housekeeping for a replacement and were told one would be forthcoming. When we returned to the room later, no-one had been. We called again. Still nothing. We passed by a staff member from the housekeeping team in the corridor and mentioned it to them and were flatly told that she wasn't able to help us. The bare minimum expected from a hotel on arrival is clean bedding and towels. I don't understand why this was so difficult to resolve. The other thing you expect from a hotel is to be able to actually sleep, which makes it all the more baffling that the staff decided to run some kind of big generator directly outside the room windows at 3am on the Saturday night. The noise from the 4th floor was bad - I can only image what guests on the 1st floor had to endure. Every time I asked a staff member for information or help, I was met with apathy or the sense that I was somehow inconveniencing them. Even for something as simple as asking for someone to attend the concierge desk - a request that was met by an eye-roll by a staff member. All weekend there was conflicting information about the price of car parking, use of the pool, which facilities were available - it seemed no-one knew what they were doing at all. Add into this that the cash machine broke, the coffee stand suffered similar issues, and so did two of the three lifts in the lobby. Even on check-out, the hotel continued to frustrate and disappoint, as the car park barriers broke. These things happen, I understand, but there was no-one manning the security desk and no-one answering the call button beside the barriers either. We had left with plenty of time to catch our coach but that time was rapdily dwindling with no solution. The queue of cars even started to obstruct the entrance. I went back to reception to report the problem and was met by four blankly staring faces at the check-in desk. I underlined that we were going to miss our coach. No apology, no sense of urgency. Finally, one of these mannequins-dressed-as-staff said "We'll call security." That was it. When someone finally came to open the barriers manually, again there was no sense of urgency. When we challenged him to say this was unacceptable, he just shrugged, smirked, and said "I'm doing the best I can". Unbelieveable. In the end, we missed our coach because of this delay and had to buy replacement train tickets to get home. Since it's right at the end of the month, and I hadn't been paid yet, this could have landed me completely stranded. But the worst thing on this extensive list of bad things, was the attitude of the bar staff towards attendees of our event. Those who were not staying at the hotel, but still attending the convention were refused service for reasons I cannot fathom. When pushed to explain this, they said that serving attendees of our convention was attracting "undesirables" to the hotel. And I think that explains our treatment for the entire duration of the stay. Simply put: we were not welcome. Despite being paying guests, who attend twice a year in great numbers, booking rooms, spending our money in the bar and restaurant, paying to use the car park and the pool and the other facilities, the Hilton Metropol Birmingham does not want us there. If you have dyed hair, tattoos, piercings, you wear alternative clothes or listen to alternative music, then you don't fit into their idea of what a Hilton guest should be. They don't want your business.

I have seen some fairly positive reviews on this hotel and not 100% sure how, Booked a king deluxe room , £147 a night roughly, honestly if you are looking to get to the NEC would be easier to stay at the premier inn, First of all, no water in the room at all, could only get one channel on the TV, and as you can see from the pictures the tap was coming off in the bathroom, no option to change rooms as fully booked but that's not the hotels fault, but could you really be bothered after unpacking surely this should be picked up on prior to check in, Went to reception a few times, but the customer service was poor, the first night I dealt with a blonde female the second night I dealt with a bald gent, both were fairly dismissive , no real care, just over all got the impression I was bothering them with my issues or needs, they were in no way rude, but also not approachable is any way, if they could huff they would have The hotels main positive is the brightsmith restaurant, looks great and the food was very good, the main bar area was pretty dirty, unclean tables, and if you decide to pay for the nachos, well wait and see I decided one night to have room service where I was told by reception to go at the bar to find out the menu (to be fair I think it is in the room somewhere but couldn't see) , this was at 8pm, and for room service you can have, a burger, a pizza, or a salad so decided to go with a takeaway The most approachable staff I found were the cleaning staff, Nothing so bad I can really put my finger on, but value for money this is not, and as a fairly frequent Hilton member this absolutely does not hit the standards I have been too before , It may sound like a fussy review but all I wanted was a nice place to crash after a business event, honestly would not return, which is a shame as its just the basics it seems are missing

Standards have slipped since we last stayed at this hotel. We were attending an event over weekend but I felt some of the staff treated us differently to perhaps other hotel residents . The event wasn't your typical corporate event BUT we pay our money just like other guests and therefore should be treated like any other guests. The Executive lounge upgrade is not worth it! Limited food/snacks on offer and food not replenished enough, If you are not in there the minute food is put out then you are most likely not going to get any fresh replenished food and instead will have to make do with the dry & cold leftovers! Its ok if you want to use the lounge for drinks BUT I was made to feel a criminal for wanting to take a couple of bottles of water out and told they MUST be drank in the Exec lounge! I could understand this if I was trying to take bottles of alcohol out of the lounge but its just water! I find this quite unreasonable to be honest especially as we don't drink alcohol so not getting our moneys worth in that respect. Next is the Hilton double charging my credit card account, when I questioned this I was asked to provide proof of the double charge which i did but the receptionist didn't seem interested and just gave a generic response that its to do with the computer systems and it happens sometimes but not to worry as only one payment will come out. After our stay and when I got home I checked my bank account to find I now had THREE pending payments of the TOTAL cost of the stay on my bank account! This is unacceptable. Its not good enough to just tell customers not to worry as only one payment will be taken when having spoken to other customers at the hotel who had said its happened to them previously and they had to claim a refund as the pending payments didn't just drop off! Hilton need to update/improve their payment systems so this doesn't occur in the first place! Customers shouldn't have to worry and chase up whether these payments have dropped off 'pending' status or not! The only good thing I have to say on this occasion is the rooms are nice and clean and have all the basics you require, good power shower and the housekeeping staff are friendly and doing a good job.

I have a mixed review about my stay this time at this hotel. I have stayed here many times and couldn’t find fault. However this time I stayed with friends for 3 nights and our room was never serviced. When we asked for our bin to be emptied, we were handed a black bin bag to do it ourselves. No good. However the experience I had with concierge gentleman Mick, outshone any other issues. He is the epitome of a Hilton member of staff. Thank you for everything Mick. I will book again purely because of your kindness and professionalism

Convention Stay - 26th to 29th April

Whether you are a corporate client looking to book a venue, or looking to book a room for a weekend - look anywhere else but here. Our stay this weekend has seen a series of issues, compounded by a frankly appalling attitude from the majority of the hotel staff. When first arriving the staff attempted to overcharge for our room, booked for £507 through booking.com. The staff attempted to bill £557 until we disputed this. With this resolved, we arrived at our room to find it was a twin room rather than the king room we booked. On calling to get this rectified, the reception staff hung up on my partner when she asked how long it would be until the facilities staff arrived to resolve the problem. I will allow, the facilities staff themselves were excellent, and the one section of the staff who genuinely lived up to the standards you would expect of a Hilton. In the early hours of Sunday morning at approximately 3am we were awakened by the noise of a diesel generator started up by maintenance staff directly below our first floor window. This was loud enough that we had no chance of any rest whatsoever. Reception staff did move us, but were unable to give any timescales of when it would stop, did not apologise for the issue, and did not explain why it was decided that 3am was an appropriate time for this generator to be started. The final day of our convention was marred by the terrible attitude of the staff. We overheard the management refer to the convention attendees in the whole as "undesirables", and a decision being made to not serve any attendees who had not booked hotel rooms at the bar. Naturally, we did not feel welcome in the slightest after this. Unfortunately we were not even able to leave the hotel without issue. The barriers at the exit were not fuctioning, and the security room was abandoned, with noone to answer the buzzers. We eventually ran back to the hotel to request assistance, which eventually arrived too in the form on a very unsympathetic and cavalier manager. He seemed to have no appriciation for the inconvenience caused. While the gates were eventually opened, the resulting delay was significant for us to miss our return bus, resulting in further incurred expenses.
